This is the Dirtiest Room in Your Home | Maid Service Facts

November 2, 2017

Certain rooms in your home may not be as clean as you think. For some, this comes as no surprise, but for others, it may be time to stop and consider what the dirtiest room in your home actually is. Our San Antonio and Reno maid service has the answer.

The Dirtiest Room in Your Home Isn’t Your Bathroom

Usually, people assume that their bathroom is the dirtiest room in their home. This would seem logical – we all know what happens in there, but that doesn’t make it the dirtiest. Instead, your kitchen is by far the dirtiest! Why do you ask? Well, the answer is simple: cross contamination.

Think of it like this: food is the perfect vector for some of the worst types of bacteria. We’re talking about pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria, like campylobactersalmonellastaphylococcusE. coli, and listeria.

And What’s the Dirtiest Thing in Your Kitchen?

According to research, the dirtiest thing in your kitchen is actually your sponge. There’s good news though; it’s relatively easy to clean. Contrary to popular belief, the best way to clean your kitchen sponge is not to throw it into the dishwasher; instead, place it in a mild bleach solution. Do this after every dishwashing and especially after cleaning up after handling poultry and raw meats.

Other Dirty Kitchen Objects and How to Clean Them:

  • Sink and Faucet

Wash your sink with soap and hot water daily, then disinfect it with kitchen cleaner. You will also want to check the inside of the faucet head for mold and mildew periodically.

  • Handles and Switches

Use a clean cloth and sanitizer to wipe down all surfaces that you or your family touch on a regular basis.

  • Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

Use a vacuum to collect large pieces of debris and dust, then follow up with a damp towel or cloth soaked in your choice of sanitizing solution.

  • Cutting Boards

Bacteria love cutting boards. These are a prime medium for cross-contamination, so be sure to isolate meats and poultry from things like produce. Sanitize your cutting boards with hot water and choice of

  • Inside of the Refrigerator

Chemical cleaners aren’t best here. Remove all of your items from the fridge before cleaning and use hot water and dishwashing soap. Remove shelves to get in all the nooks and crannies, then wash and sanitize your sink.

  • The Stove

The stove is tricky. Almost always you will want to pull your stove out, sweep, vacuum and sanitize underneath and behind it. For the actual stove-top, some surfaces require special cleaning solutions e.g. glass stove-tops, while other, older, more traditional models only require typical cleaning solutions.
